NEW DELHI: Reliance Brands pipped FirstCry.com to acquire the rights to operate stores of UK-based kids products company Mothercare in India. The deal will give the unit of Reliance Industries control over all Mothercare outlets currently run by DLF Brands, according to three people aware of the matter.
What did Mothercare used to be called?
In 1986, Habitat Mothercare plc merged with British Home Stores, to form Storehouse plc. In January 1996, it bought Children’s World from Boots, and rebranded these stores as Mothercare World. In May 2000, the Bhs stores were sold to Philip Green, and Storehouse reverted to the Mothercare brand.
How many Mothercare stores are there in India?
Mothercare operates 54 stores in India, 25 of them standalone through the DLF joint venture and 29 in the shop-in-shop format in Shoppers Stop outlets.
