Wellston was granted a charter as a third- class city in 1909, but the Missouri Supreme Court ruled in 1911 that the city had not been legally incorporated. Until its reincorporation in 1949, Wellston was a loosely defined area of the county and north St. Louis around the Wellston Loop.
