Where are Navy ship logs kept?
Deck logs for commissioned U.S. Navy ships covering the past 30 years are maintained by the Naval History and Heritage Command, Archives Branch, Washington Navy Yard, D.C. Most of these are stored at the Washington National Records Center (WNRC) in Suitland, Maryland.
Who keeps the ship’s log?
Short for logbook, a document required to be kept by merchant and naval vessels. In the log must be recorded specific information relating to the navigation of the ship, the organization of her crew, and other activities on board. In the merchant marine, the rank below master. Mates may be first, second, third, etc.

Where you can find the Logbooks. These logbooks are located at the National Archives at College Park. Some merchant vessels logs may also be found in our Records of the Office of Naval Records and Library (RG 45).
How do I find my grandfather’s navy records?
You can request a copy of the Veteran’s military records in any of these ways:
- Mail or fax a Request Pertaining to Military Records (Standard Form SF 180) to the National Personnel Records Center (NPRC).
- Write a letter to the NPRC.
- Visit the NPRC in person.
- Contact your state or county Veterans agency.
