Although Aliquippa’s enrollment would place the Quips in Class 1A, they had voluntarily played “up” in Class 3A from 2016-19. The Quips became a victim of their own success, but also having transfer students. They were bumped up to 4A for the past two seasons under the competitive-balance rule.

The PIAA then enacted a formula across the state that would allow teams to be forced to play “up” in class based on the number of transfers, and competitive “points” accumulated in WPIAL and PIAA playoff victories. That formula resulted in Aliquippa being forced to play up to 4-A in 2018.
