What is atresia ani?
Atresia ani is a developmental defect of the anal opening or terminal rectum (see Figure 41-4). Kittens usually present within days or weeks of birth with abdominal distention, discomfort, tenesmus, restlessness, vomiting, and/or loss of appetite.
How do you fix atresia ani?
Surgery to correct atresia ani is often delayed until 6 to 8 weeks of age. Fine instruments such as jewelers’ forceps and tenotomy scissors are used to carefully dissect the skin of the anus inwardly and identify the rectal pouch. Rectal vaginal fistulas vary in depth and width of communication.
When do we use Invertogram?
Indications. This view is ideal for indicating the distance between the gas bubble in the terminal colon and the perineal skin, allowing the classification of anal atresia in neonates. The image is often obtained 24 hours after birth, to allow for small fistulas to become apparent.
How do you read Invertogram?
Invertogram. A coin/metal piece is placed over the expected anus and the baby is turned upside down (for a minimum 3 minutes). The distance of the gas bubble in the rectum from the metal piece is noted: >2 cm denotes high type.
What causes atresia ani?
The congenital absence of a patent anus at birth is rather uncommon in swine. The cause is not known but may have a genetic component or may be from an insult to the fetus in critical developmental stages in utero. The resultant megacolon may not be clinically apparent until several weeks of age.
What is Invertogram Why is it done?
An invertogram may be used to investigate the extent of the defect in anal or rectal atresia. The anus is marked with a radiopaque marker, and the baby inverted. A lateral radiograph is taken. The air in the rectum will rise to the highest point, giving an indication of the extent of the atresia.
