How thick can Nikasil Plating be?
Coating Thickness of Nikasil® In practical use the cylinder walls or sleeves are electroplated with a layer of Nikasil®, typically between 80 and 180 µm thick.
What is Nikasil cylinder plating?
NiCom (Nikasil) plating is an electro-composite coating – consisting of a nickel metal matrix with hard particulate dispersed uniformly within it. The process involves electroplating nickel in the presence of hard particulates, such as SiC, under conditions allowing the hard particulate to co-deposit with the nickel.
How do I know if my cylinder needs Replating?
There are the obvious signs; scratches (a good rule of thumb is if you can feel the scratch with your fingernail then it needs replating), plating worn through to the base metal, flaked plating or a piston seizure to name a few.
Should you hone a Nikasil cylinder?
If the Nikasil plating is chipped, nicked, cut-through, has worn spots or is showing signs of wear, do not use Flex-Hone® tools. Instead, strip and re-plate the coating, or replace the cylinder altogether. Again, because Nikasil platings are very thin and very hard, honing will expose any existing damage.
Can you bore Nikasil plated cylinder?
plated cylinders can even be welded to fix bore damage so there is usually no reason to ever bore them over unless you desire more displacement. sever damage and welding may require a small bore increase though.
When should a cylinder be replated?
Premium Member. The cylinder bores are plated with nicasil which is a chrome like plating from the factory. When one is damaged due to a piston seizure or other damaging event they can be replated to restore them to like new specs.
How can you tell if a cylinder is plated?
If your cylinder does have a sleeve, you should be able to see the seam between the sleeve and the actual cylinder. If you’re still not sure, check to see if a magnet sticks to the cylinder wall. If it sticks, it’s a sleeve, and if it doesn’t, it’s plated.
Does Nikasil wear out?
No with normal wear. More issues with 2t when you lean out and or crack a rings. You should be good to go if your cylinder is in spec.
How strong is a Nikasil?
NiCom, which is one trademarked name for Nikasil has a hardness of 58 C Rockwell. Chrome is a tad harder, at 66–70 C. Both are harder than cast iron or most forms of steel – which is commonly the alternative to full aluminium bores.
