The Junior Iditarod Sled Dog Race, or Jr. Iditarod, is a 148- to 158-mile (222 km) sled dog race for mushers between the ages of 14 through 17, which is patterned after the 1,150-mile Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race that is said to be 1,049 miles (1,688.2 km).

Each musher must carry mandatory items: a sleeping bag, an axe, a pair of snowshoes, eight booties for each dog etc.. The musher will be disqualified for cruel or inhumane treatment of dogs or for improper dog care.
Why can a musher be disqualified from the race?
Mushers can be disqualified for deliberately breaking the rules, cheating, or abuse of the dogs. The musher is given the chance to present his case to the judges before a decision is made.
