What street is the Old Bailey on?
The Old Bailey, also known as Justice Hall, the Sessions House, and the Central Criminal Court, was named after the street in which it was located, just off Newgate Street and next to Newgate Prison, in the western part of the City of London.
Why do some cases go to the Old Bailey?
The Old Bailey is a law court where cases against people accused of serious crimes are tried by a judge and jury. These include amongst other crimes: theft. murder.

What cases are heard in the Central Criminal Court?
Offences such as murder, rape, treason and piracy are dealt with by the Central Criminal Court. Terrorist offences and offences with an organized crime element can be heard by the non-jury Special Criminal Court. Decisions of the Circuit Court in criminal matters can be appealed to the Court of Appeal.
Can anyone attend a Crown Court hearing?
You can go into the public gallery (as long as you are 14 or over) at a Crown Court or Magistrates’ Court and watch a criminal trial or a sentencing hearing. This will add to your knowledge about what to expect in your own case.
What happens when a book of evidence is served?
When a case is sent forward for trial, a book of evidence is served on the accused by the DPP in the District Court. The book includes all the evidence that the prosecution intend to raise in court, for example, a statement of the charges against the accused and a list of witnesses the DPP intends to call.
