What is a GTFS file?
A GTFS feed is composed of a series of text files collected in a ZIP file. Each file models a particular aspect of transit information: stops, routes, trips, and other schedule data. The details of each file are defined in the GTFS reference. An example feed can be found in the GTFS examples.
How do I get GTFS data?
In order to create a GTFS feed follow the steps below.
- Create all the required files described in the GTFS Schedule reference. Create the optional files if their functionality is desired.
- Save all files in the . txt format.
- Zip all the text files together.
- Publish the feed by using one of the options below.
Who uses GTFS?
Currently, over 200 transit agencies in the United States have chosen to openly share their GTFS data. The Google Transit Partner Program allows public transportation agencies to provide schedules and geographic information to Google Maps and other Google applications that show transit information.

OpenTripPlanner (OTP) is an open source multi-modal trip planner, focusing on travel by scheduled public transportation in combination with bicycling, walking, and mobility services including bike share and ride hailing.
How do I use Google transit?
Adjust your time of departure
- On your mobile device, open the Google Maps app .
- Search for your destination or tap it on the map.
- Enter a destination and tap Directions .
- At the top, tap Transit .
- At the top, enter your starting location.
- Confirm your departure date and time, then tap the route you want.
