What are Xeroform petrolatum dressings used for?
Xeroform is used to cover and protect low to non-exudating wounds. Xeroform is an occlusive dressing that keeps air out, which can help to protect the area while also promoting a moist environment for healing. Xeroform uses include protecting donor sites, lacerations, burns, abrasions, and skin graft sites.
When should you not use Xeroform?
Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any of these:
- Increased redness, swelling, or warmth in the skin around the wound.
- Fluid buildup under the Xeroform.
- Bad smell coming from the wound.
- Fever above 100.4 °F (38°C) or higher, or as directed by your healthcare provider.
- Chills.
- Increasing pain.
- Bleeding.
How long can you leave Xeroform on?
Commonly used over donor sites to absorb fluids and allow healing. May be kept in place for up to one week and changed as needed for leaking or prior to discharge from hospital.
Can I put a Xeroform to open wound?
Xeroform is a yellow gauze dressing. It is often put on open wounds and skin grafts to help keep them moist. Your doctor will tell you how often to change your dressing. This is usually once a day.
Does Xeroform prevent infection?
Xeroform is biocompatible, reduces infection, and enhances healing of burn wounds by preventing desiccation and mechanical trauma.
What are side effects of Xeroform?

Is Xeroform antibacterial?
The compound used in bismuth-impregnated dressings is bismuth tribromophenate (BTP), marketed as Xeroform or as a generic dressing. BTP is antimicrobial, i.e. it inhibits bacterial growth and replication, and so may prevent numbers of bacteria in a wound reaching a level at which infection may occur[22].
What can I use instead of Xeroform?
