Why do they put a balloon in a pregnant woman?
It’s a catheter that’s inserted into the cervix. Once it’s in place, a doctor fills the balloon with saline solution. The balloon puts pressure on the cervix, causing it to dilate. Once the cervix begins to open, the balloon falls out, contractions start and life as you know it is about to change.
How painful is a foley balloon?
The insertion of a Foley catheter can be a bit uncomfortable, and some women experience sharp pelvic pain. The pain may subside once the catheter is in place. Once induction takes place, contractions may begin shortly thereafter.

After the catheter has been placed, it just may feel a little strange, possibly like having a large tampon in. Contractions and dilation may begin soon after the balloon is inflated—or it may take 12 to 24 hours for labor to begin.

If you fall pregnant with a balloon in place, the balloon is removed when it is safe to do so, typically in the second trimester. Otherwise, there have been no known problems to mother or baby from the presence of a gastric balloon.

You may safely give the Foley a gentle tug (much like removing a tampon) when you are up to the bathroom to see if it has worked its way out of the cervix. You should be able to have normal urination and bowel movements.
What happens if balloon induction doesnt work?
Usually your cervix will open up naturally on its own once your body is ready to go into labor. But if it hasn’t shown any signs of dilating, your doctor can get the ripening rolling with a Foley bulb, synthetic hormones or a combination of the two.
Does Pitocin harm baby?
Pitocin is widely utilized in labor and delivery rooms and can be highly effective when used carefully and responsibly. However, the use of Pitocin to induce or speed up labor often results in overstimulation and fetal distress which increases the risk of birth injury. Pitocin is not a bad drug.
Can I go home after balloon induction?
If you are suitable for outpatient induction of labour, you can go home while the catheter is in place. You will be given a time to attend the maternity triage for removal of the catheter in 24 hours.
