Most adult Diptera receive the majority of their nutrition as larvae and do not feed extensively. Many need carbohydrates to power their flight, however, and feed on the nectar in flowers, or on honeydew, the sweet secretions of Homoptera. Some flies require nitrogen for nourishing their eggs and are thus avid flower visitors in search of pollen.
