What coastal management is at Swanage?
Today, Swanage has 1.8km of coastal defence works, mainly concrete or stone sea walls and timber groynes. The sea wall and groynes to the south of the bay were put in place in the late nineteenth century.
What impact have groynes had on Swanage Bay?
New timber groynes were installed on Swanage beach in 2005-6 and have reduced the loss of beach material. But, by stopping the movement of beach material along the coast beaches further down the coast are becoming narrower and subject to more erosion (due to reduced ability to absorb wave energy).

The sandy beach is one of the main attractions of the town. The waters are clean, and the beach has won many European Blue Flag Awards, as well as the Seaside Award. Swanage beach has a well earned reputation for being a good place to soak up the sun and play in the sand and sea.

Beach nourishment is the mechanical re-placement of sand in the coastal zone to maintain sand in the littoral system. It stabilizes the shoreline and supports the flood and/or erosion protection of the coast. Beach nourishment has been widely practised in Europe in the last decades.

Dogs welcome all year, off lead at Swanage’s Monkey Beach (between Stone Quay and Swanage Pier). Dogs welcome off lead on Swanage’s main beach between 1 October and 30 April.
