What Cage does a tenrec need?
We suggest using a cage that is at least 36 inches long by 18 inches wide by 18 inches tall. You can use cages that are larger, tenrecs do best in larger cages, that is just the minimum we suggest.
How do you keep a tenrec?
This species can be housed in larger aquarium style tanks or wire style enclosures as long as the wire enclosure can be kept sufficiently warm to prevent torpor. You must provide a heat pad for tenrecs year round otherwise they can go into torpor during cooler times of the year.

Heat and light- UVB lighting is optional for tenrecs, however if you decide not to use it there are substitutes you will need to use (see feeding in bold below). Wooden vivariums can be dark, so we use White Python LED lights to brighten it up.

Each tenrec depending on color will vary between $1300 to $1500 regardless of gender for the tenrec only. As tenrec genitals are inside their body… the only way to positively identify their gender is through a DNA lab in Europe.
Do tenrecs need humidity?
Without an adequate heat source, they may enter brumation. As they’re naturally found in dry climates, try to avoid excessive humidity levels. Tenrecs enjoy burrowing, so we would advise against using fleece.

To make tenrecs happy, Storm says they need a large cage, something to climb on, a wheel, a place to hide and plenty of fresh food and water.
