Can canvas tell if you switch tabs?
Ideally, Canvas cannot detect if a student opened new tabs in a web browser or opened a new application or web browser during a quiz or test. However, if proctored, Canvas will monitor and prevent student’s browser activity. They are also provided with the general time frame spent by the student on each page.

What does the WebAssign LockDown browser do?
The LockDown Browser restricts students’ computer activities while they’re working on a test. While the assignment is open, students are unable to access other browser windows, applications, or files.

The options to delete or replace the submission will appear beneath the student’s name. Replacing a PDF will not delete any grading progress on that submission. You can also upload a new scanned submission on the Manage Submissions page, by clicking Upload Submission in the bottom action bar.

How does Gradescope detect cheating?
After using Gradescope for a year, I realized that it could be used to detect cheating. Gradescope allows you to see submissions to specific questions in sequence, making it easy to spot submissions that are identical, a red-flag for copied answers. While not a feature, it is an undocumented bonus.

Although it may seem easy to cheat on WebAssign, Mr. Smith believes, in the long run, it is harder. The teachers can track the IP address, a unique number assigned to every device connected to a computer network, back to the computer which was used for the homework.
