What is needed for a solid axle swap?
With a solid axle swap, prepare to rip everything out of the truck pertaining to steering, suspension, and the axle. Depending on the application, cutting off mounting points on the frame may be required as well. And even with a direct swap kit, welding will be necessary for mounting the springs and suspension system.
Are solid front axles better?

Typical inboard CV joints provide a plunge movement of about 50mm and a maximum articulation angle of about 22 to 31 degrees (depending on make and model). A clicking or popping noise is indicative of a worn or damaged outer CV joint. One way to confirm this is to drive the vehicle in reverse (in a circle).
How much CV angle is too much?
I would suggest going no further than about 15 degrees. You have to remember the cv also goes side to side when you turn so if the angle is steep it will bind real bad and slowly ruin it when turning and they will break constantly when using 4lo.

The 88-98 Chevy 4WD 1500, 2500 and 3500 frames and the 2WD 1500 frames are all very similar and our solid axle conversion works on those trucks without issue. The 88-98 2WD 2500 and 3500 trucks are different.
