The term Koplik spot derives its name from Dr. Henry Koplik of New York, who first described them in 1896. The appearance of Koplik spots in the mucosa is usually one day before the onset of rash.

Mild symptoms like red eyes, conjunctivitis, photophobia (sensitivity to light), fever, runny nose and cough usually manifest after the incubation period. These are often followed by the development of Koplik spots on the buccal mucosa. Sometimes, Koplik’s spots look like Forschheimer spots.
