Where in Cornwall is the Helford River?
The Helford River is a large estuary that nestles snugly between the western edge of Falmouth Bay and eastern side of The Lizard Peninsula. It is renowned for its scenic beauty and marine ecology and is a popular tourist destination.
Can you swim in Helford River?
It’s the freedom of open water swimming that is making it so popular, you get to look at cormorants diving beneath waves as you do and experience your surroundings as they occur in nature, rather than confining yourself to a chlorinated pool.
Where does the Helford River start?
The Helford rises in the parish of Gweek being fed by two streams, one from Merther-Uny towards Wendron parish and one from the Mellangoose area towards Helston. From Gweek, the Helford River winds its way through tree-lined banks with its first creek, Ponsontuel, branching to the south west.
How deep is the Helford River?
There are no further hazards at the entrance to the river, whose depth averages between 3m/9.8ft and 4m/13.1ft. Please note that there can be a funnelling effect at the mouth when beating in. However, the shelter once inside is excellent in all but an easterly wind.
What fish can I catch in the Helford River?
A wide range of fish may be caught during the appropriate season including – cod, whiting, coley, pouting, thornback ray, mackerel, bass, garfish, pollack, scad, grey mullet, plaice, dabs, red mullet, wrasse, flounder, lesser spotted dogfish, black bream, gilthead bream and couch’s bream.

Where can I launch a kayak on the Helford River?
If you’re keen to explore this stretch of water then you can launch from Durgan. For a day launch permit you’ll need to pay £2 for a kayak / canoe or £6 for other boats. Payment for a day launch can be made to a member of the team at the entrance building at Glendurgan Garden.
Can you swim in Falmouth Harbour?

Carn Marth Pool (or the Cornish Granite and Freestone quarry) once provided granite for a number of prominent buildings around nearby Redruth. It’s a lovely swim spot, with banks dropping down to its revitalising waters, where islands are waiting to be conquered.
