Why is Poson Poya important?
The Poson Poya is the most venerated day for the devout Buddhists of Sri Lanka as it marks the arrival of Arahat Mahinda Thero carrying the noble teachings of the Buddha.
How is Poson Poya celebrated?
Outside of Anuradhapura and Mihintale, the festival is celebrated with the telling of stories, music, dancing, the giving of free food and teas (provided by special vendors known as Dansals), and the hanging of paper lanterns. Some parts of Sri Lanka prohibit the selling of meat and alcohol during the festival.

How many days Poya in a year?
There are around a dozen Poya Days every year, in conformity with the Buddhist lunar calendar and moon-phase marking system. As 70 percent of Sri Lankans are Buddhist, most of the population celebrates each Poya Day as of religious significance.
