What do you wear to a spica cast?
Young children may want to wear clothes that cover the cast more. Large t-shirts, pants that button up the side, loose dresses, etc can usually be worn over the spica cast.
How do you carry a toddler in spica cast?
Children can be positioned for play on their back, side or tummy, using pillows for support. Lying on the unaffected side with the cast supported with pillows between the legs can be a comfortable position. Make sure your child’s toes, ankles and heel (if not included in hip spica) can move freely.
How should I dress my baby with hip dysplasia?
Clothing. Onesies under the harness, or body suits with snaps below for easy diaper changes work well for most babies. Collared body suits are often recommended, but the regular ones are usually all that’s needed unless the straps are rubbing the neck. Clothing should be loose around the legs as much as possible.

Spica (body) casts are used to keep the thighbone (femur) and pelvis still. We call this immobilization. This cast holds the joint above the hip (the spine) and the joint below the hip (the knee) still, so that the femur and pelvic bones stay still to heal.

A spica cast covers the child from the armpits around the chest all the way to the ankle of one or both legs. If the cast only goes to one ankle, the other leg is in the cast to just above the knee. There is an opening in the diaper area.
