Who is Jasper Hawes?
Jasper Hawes, orginally from Missouri, came to the area from Montreal on a contract as a clerk for a trading company later to be known as the Hudson’s Bay Company. At the begining of the 1800’s a successful passage through the Rocky Mountains was a top priority to the fur trading companies.
Why was Jasper house built?
It was established as a staging post for brigades travelling to the company’s Columbia District trading posts through the Athabasca Pass, and for a short time served as the connection and supply point between east and west.

1813 – The North West Company builds the first Jasper House at the north end of Brûlé Lake as a provisioning post for fur traders. 1821 – The Hudson’s Bay Company and North West Company merge and keep the name Hudson’s Bay Company.

The site was named for Jasper Hawes, who operated the trading post from 1814 until 1817. In 1909, the building was dismantled to provide lumber to the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway. Now all that remains is a small cemetery.
